Wellington Road Trips

Foxton to Wellington

Leave Foxton and head south on SH1. You will pass through the small settlements of Poroutawhao and Heatherlea before soon arriving in the bustling city of Levin. Check out the picturesque Lake Horowhenua nearby.

Leaving Levin south on SH1 you will pass through the towns of Ohau, Manakau, Otaki, Te Horo, Waikanae, Paraparaumu, Paekakariki, Pukerua Bay, and Plimmerton.

Soon you arrive in Porirua. Check out the local museums, and retail mall - said to be the biggest in the region.

From Porirua, SH1 becomes a motorway system through Linden, Tawa, Redwood, and Glenside, all the way to central Wellington City.

Masterton to Wellington

Leave Masterton on SH2 and head south. You pass through Carterton, known for its daffodils and wild flowers.

Not much further on is Greytown, one of the most picturesque towns in the country. Its colonial past is on show in all its splendor.

While there, take a detour to the Martinborough vineyards by taking a left at the southern end of the town.

Back on SH2 you finally come to Featherston, the last town before hitting the Rimutaka Range. While there, take a trip south to Cape Palliser and see the seal colony and lighthouse.

Leaving Featherston you head west over the Rimutaka Range. Be sure to check weather conditions because the road can be closed during the winter.

Once reaching the other side you are now in Upper Hutt, the top end of the Hutt Valley and first inkling of the greater Wellington region.

Carry on down SH2, which follows the Hutt River, and you pass through Lower Hutt and other suburbs of Hutt Valley before finally hitting Wellington

It is recommended that you have detailed road maps before departing on your trip
